故事开始于七十年代的北京。一批部队子弟在什刹海溜冰场不期而遇，宋京生（丁志诚 饰）与辛黑子（傅彪 饰）因罗冬娜（刘蓓 饰）发生龉龃，并以决斗论胜负。后来，他们都参军去了部队，宋京生还因救人负了重伤，罗冬娜写信问候，不料信落在了李东征（李朝晖 饰）之手，致使俩人发生误解。被宋京生救过的辛平平（咏梅 饰）爱上救命恩人，无奈宋心中只装着罗冬娜。在部队事业如日中天的宋建军（张涵予 饰），始终回避着小惠（陶虹 饰）频投的橄榄枝，而罗冬娜对李东征的献殷勤则表示了厌恶。退伍回家的宋京生和辛黑子、小胖（王佳宁 饰）办起个体饭馆自谋生路，而先前拒绝接受辛平平的京生父母终于松了口。在那个特殊年代里，毎个青年人都在践行着自己的梦想......
